Accessorizing a Bright and Airy Bedroom on a Budget – ORC Week 5
The guest bedroom is really coming together after 5 weeks of the One Room Challenge. All the major elements like furniture, lighting, and window treatments are there. Now what’s left is all the accessorizing and giving the space personality! I always say not to underestimate the finishing touches. These are the smaller items like pillows, vases, frames, art, and so on that really make a space feel complete. It’s like taking your jeans and t-shirt outfit from blah to wow by adding great jewelry, shoes, and bag! For my guest room I wanted to keep the feeling light, fresh, modern and cheerful. So I’m adding some bright and cute accent colors like aqua, yellow, and gold to a mainly white room. I also needed some great wall decor starting with something for over the bed. I really liked this canvas print of a beach scene* from World Market. Side note: If you haven’t shopped their art* before it’s one of my go-tos for large scale affordable art. I even wrote a post about it. And occasionally they have sales. I actually got this piece for another room, but turns out it fits the style of the guest room really well. I was originally going to hang this over the bed, but when I held it up there it felt too large (it’s 30″x40″) and demanded too much attention, turning the room into a very beach oriented theme. Instead, I hung it next to the window over the desk that I’m passing off as a console.
Another way I like getting cheap art is buying inexpensive frames from places like Ikea, Target*, and Michael’s and then framing wallpaper, wrapping paper, or pretty papers from Papersource*. This is what I did here. Frame is from Ikea. Paper is from Papersource*.
Over the bed, I ended up hanging a cute, gold mirror I found at West Elm over a year ago. It was deeply discounted because it was a floor sample! I loved it, bought it and it sat in a closet. I never had a place for it until now! I debated the small size of the mirror and if it would look out of proportion over the bed. Usually I like going with bigger pieces over the bed, but I actually liked the way the smaller mirror looked.
Retail store floor samples sales are actually a great unexpected source for discounted items that are still current. Sometimes they are from the past season, sometimes the stores are just changing out their displays. I also got this ottoman as a floor sample from West Elm. Of course it’s hit or miss and you’ll want to just check them out for any major damage that can’t be fixed.
