Budget Lighting: A DIY and Plug-in Wall Sconces under $100! - One Room Challenge Week 3

Week 3 of my One Room Challenge guest bedroom on a budget was all about figuring out how to light the room. I like my rooms well lit at night. For a guest room we shouldn’t forget to have nice, warm, layered lighting at night too. That means having at least 2 sources of light in a small room, more if the room is larger. It can be a combination of ceiling light fixtures, floor lamps, table lamps, sconces, desk lamps, ambient and task lighting.

DIY Spray Painted Mushroom Light Fixture

I have a junction box in the center of the ceiling so I can install a light fixture. I’ve been using a mushroom light taken from my closet when I changed out those lights. Because the ceiling is a standard height of 8 feet, I wanted a flush mount or semi-flush mount light to keep it high and draw the eye up. But I didn’t really find any cute ones for what I wanted to spend (less than $100) so I decided to scrap that and try spray painting my mushroom light a fun color. I’m normally not into DIY but I figure the worst that can happen is I lose a cheap mushroom light.

My color inspiration was actually this aqua pillow from Ikea (right).

I bought this aqua spray paint at Lowe’s for about $5. Color is Nautical. Sheen is Satin. Tip: I brought my pillow cover to Lowe’s so I could try to match the spray paint cap color as close as possible. Saved me from buying multiple colors or an extra trip. Hey, anything helps when you’re on a budget! Time is money too!

I separated the glass shade from the metal base, propped the metal base up on a plastic cup and spray painted it. After it dried I put the light back together and installed it on the ceiling and voila! The aqua color makes it really cute! It would be perfect for a kids room too! And now I have my accent color for this room!

It’s coming together!

Plug-in Wall Sconces Under $100

On to the lamps. I was originally thinking 2 table lamps, one on each nightstand. But I really wanted to do something different since the window is only on one side of the bed which makes it not symmetrical. So to create some balance and interest I used a wall sconce on the other side of the bed. I used a plug-in one so I don’t have to get anything hardwired. I found this one in white on sale at West Elm. Here it is installed.

Since I love plug-in wall sconces so much (so versatile and pretty!) here are more great ones I found under $100! Some are for 2!

1 – NickelGold | 2 – Brass* | 3 – Brass* | 4 – Chrome* | 5 – Brass* | 6 – Steel* | 7 – Glass* For the nightstand in front of the window I wanted something made out of wood to add warmth to the room since the nightstands are metal. I found this one at World Market* and it’s the perfect round shape that balances all the angles in the room. Just adding this one piece immediately brings a beachy vibe into the room without making it too theme-y. It doesn’t take much!

I’m half-way through this 6 week challenge, and I think it’s coming together! Of course this is not a huge makeover with major renovations which would be so much tougher, but not every update requires an overhaul or a big budget. Sometimes it’s the finishing touches that make the difference!
